eAPP project - how an app can help undocumented immigrants

A single touch on the screen can turn into a help way for thousands of undocumented immigrants on the USA.

This is what an organization for the undocumented peoples rights proposes, developing a new app for smartphones to tell relatives, friends and lawyers that is owner has been arrested by the police.

"Emergency alert and personal protection (eAPP)" is the tentative name for this app that will set a list of recipients of the help message and this message also includes information about time and place of incident, using GPS technology.

"It is a technological response to emergency situations in a state where the reality of illegal immigrants has changed dramatically and has generated a wave of fear" Todd Landfried. app developer.

The project was conceived in Arizona, the first state to pass a controversial law that criminalizes immigrants without residence permit. Since the 1070 came into force in 2010, this border became the scene of battle between activists defending the rights of migrants and those who promote greater involvement of the authorities to the presence of the 11 million people estimated residing illegally in the United States.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants have left Arizona Hispanic Pew Center estimated about 120 thousand exodus last year, and those who remain are exposed to increased controls and penalties: if you are arrested for a misdemeanor traffic for example, police can demand proof of legal residence and, if lacking it may be subjected to deportation proceedings.

Under development

The app aims to assist these arrests daily.
"When someone is standing on the street for a traffic, which is the most common currently undocumented get detected, the first thing that comes to his mind is family," said Lydia Guzman, president of the UN, which is behind the project.

In case you get into trouble, the undocumented person can be sent from a phone with Android system or IOS a text message or e-mail default, which may operate with a single click or even in "hands free".

The application also report in English and Spanish, what civil rights has involved the time of arrest, for example reminding that can remain silent or ask for a lawyer who witnesses the interrogation.

It also serves to collect audio and video. Like any smart phone, which in this case just send it automatically to a secure web interface where information will be stored for use in the future, for example in the context of a legal case.

"If you can record the moment, all that serves as evidence in court later," said Landfried, who worked for the organization of Arizona Employers for Immigration Reform , a coalition calling for a comprehensive federal reform.
